This savory Cabbage Casserole is a cozy winter treat. The consistency is similar to a quiche with a creamy cabbage center, fresh herbs and an irresistible crust. The golden cheesy crust takes this over the top with a slight cheese pull when it’s hot and fresh out of the oven.

We serve this with a hefty dollop of sour cream. My husband eats slices like he does pizza which makes me all giddy because it’s just a glorious slice of vegetables – YES!!

This cabbage casserole pie is everything I love about Ukrainian and Russian recipes – using simple, basic, inexpensive ingredients to make something completely delicious.

My Mom found this recipe idea on Youtube and made it for a family dinner. Everyone was smitten and we adopted it quickly!

FAQs

Why is my stuffed cabbage tough? ›

If your cooked cabbage is tough, it's likely because the cabbage is not cooked through yet. Continue to cook the rolls until they're tender. It's also important to make sure you let the rolls rest after they're finished baking.

Can dogs eat raw cabbage? ›

Dogs can eat cabbage, raw or cooked, but it should be fed in small amounts, like as an occasional treat. Be aware cabbage can increase flatulence in dogs. Credit: Boris Zhitkov / Getty Images. Cabbage can provide some fiber and lots of vitamins and minerals.

Why do you soak cabbage before cooking? ›

Crisp it up: Shredded cabbage stays perky if it's soaked in cold water. This also helps cut the pungent edge. Drain well before combining with other ingredients.

What does baking soda do to cabbage? ›

You don't add baking soda. Adding baking soda to your boiling cabbage can help reduce the objectionable smell and maintain the green color long after when it typically turns grayish from cooking for too long. However, this may rid the cabbage of its nutritional value.

Can you overcook cabbage? ›

The key to cooking cabbage: Don't overcook it.

Cabbage is sweet and aromatic when cooked correctly. But the same sulfuric compounds that provide many of its health benefits can turn saboteur when overcooked, creating a pungent, unpleasant smell.

How do you cut cabbage for food? ›

Wash the cabbage and pat dry. Cut the cabbage in half and then cut the core out of both halves in a triangle shape and discard. Minimize prep time by slicing the cabbage small enough to fit into your food processor feed tube.
